(Older Australians Talk Mental Health)
June 5th

Researchers from three different universities have been exploring how Australians over 60 experience and understand mental health. The aim is to help older Australians to lead healthier happier lives by reducing the stigma around late-onset depression and anxiety. They will launch a ten-week podcast at Connect on June 6th to raise awareness of mental health in later life. You are invited to an audience focus group to listen to one of the episodes and join a group discussion prior to the launch.

Connect 60+
Week 2 of Connect 60+ begins next week.
Come along at 9:30 AM as we explore the intellectual dimension of wellness—an engaging and enriching session that invites you to think, reflect, and connect in new ways.
We’ll begin with a short, light video to gently get your body moving and energised for the day. From there, we’ll transition into a powerful storytelling workshop led by Debra deClerk, who will guide us through an exploration of our personal histories, beginning with something as simple—but meaningful—as your name.
This workshop encourages self-reflection, memory-sharing, and thoughtful conversation, all in a supportive and welcoming environment. It’s a wonderful opportunity to deepen your understanding of yourself and others, while nurturing your intellectual wellness.

Safer Speed Safer Street

Our local streets are where people live, work, move, play and connect. As part of the Perth Inner City Group (PICG)(External link), the Town of Victoria Park (the Town) is aiming to roll out slower speeds (40km/h) on all local access roads, to improve road safety.
Research shows that reducing speed on local access roads to 40km/h significantly reduces the severity of car crashes, therefore reducing the likelihood of fatalities. Further, a 20% reduction from 50km/h to 40km/h in speed results in a 200% increase in the likelihood of a person surviving a collision with a moving vehicle.
The Town aims to reduce the speed to 40km/h on all local access roads. Main roads or distributor roads would be considered by Main Roads WA (MRWA) only by exception. MRWA are the lead agency for setting speed limits and determine the number and placement of speed signs on all streets and roads. Once approved, MRWA will work with the Town and wider PICG to plan the roll out of new 40km/h signs. This will likely take over 12 months to implement.
Reducing speeds on residential streets will make our neighbourhoods safer for drivers, cyclists, kids and dog walkers, and support our community to live their best lives.
The Town is conducting a Survey on road safety in the Town and where you'd like to see slower speeds implemented through our community. Your feedback will help inform the future of this project.
