Hello everyone,

The year is racing along and we are already near the end of February. This week we will meet the candidates from the Liberal Party so don't forget to write a list of questions and concerns to discuss with them. Anita Clayton from Arthritis &Osteoporosis WA (also a hub member) will give an informative talk about different types of Arthritis and the various treatments. We will also have our Sundowner on Friday, so don't forget to come along for a great night.

Be Informed - Meet the Candidates

Friday 28th February at 2.30pm

This year there will be an election at every level of Government - Federal, State, and Local. On March 8 we kick off with the WA State election, and the Federal Election will be close behind. We will again have to decide who will represent us for the next four years.

Our Be Informed programme has invited all of the local candiates who are likely to form Government at State and Federal levels to join us to share their plan for our local community and where they stand on the big issues. You will also have the opportunity to ask them questions about their respective visions and policies.

Last week we kicked off with Labor candidates The Hon Hannah Beasley MLA and Zaneta Mascarenhas MP. This week we will meet Liberal candidates Andra Biondi and Mic Fels on Friday 28 February at 2.30 and Greens candidates Jack Gordon-Manley and Clint Uink on Wednesday 26 February at 3.00pm. Last week saw high levels of attendance so make sure you book early and don't miss out. Remember to bring some questions if there are any issues which affect you or that you feel strongly about.

Afternoon tea will be served following their address.

We will also gain resources for support on arthritis issues.

Don't sit at home feeling bored or lonely, get your dancing shoes on and come down to the hub next Friday for an enjoyable and inexpensive evening with your first drink free. $5 for village hub members and $10 for non-members

Connect 60+

Friday 9.00am-11am

Week five

This week Connect 60+ focused on Spiritual Wellness. We began with a general discussion of what spirituality is and members shared the many different ways in which they express this aspect of their lives. We discovered some people follow traditional methods like praying and going to a place of worship, others were in touch with more current practices such as Reiki , Crystal healing and Tai Chi. A big favorite was spending time in nature. One person said his spiritual practice "gives me the strength to go on with life". Another said she felt a "connection with the unknown and unseen". Whichever way you practice spirituality I think we all agreed that it is an important aspect of life. After the discussion Celesta delivered a chair yoga session which everyone enjoyed.

Week Six

Next Friday Connect 60+ will focus on Environmental Wellness. In the hustle and bustle of city life people often forget the benefits of spending some time in a natural environment. H spending time outdoors can help to reduce anxiety, depression, anger and fear. Studies have also shown that memory performance and attention span can improve by 20% after just an hour of interacting with nature. Another benefit is exposure to Vitamin D which is an essential nutrient for helping older adults absorb calcium which in turn leads to good bone health. Experiencing the outdoors with others also fosters social connections in the form of walking groups or participating in a group such as the Victoria Park Community Garden on Albany Highway. This week Iain Murray will present a session on Herb Potting at the community garden in Victoria Park. Please go directly there.

Still to come in this cycle is

Feb 28th - Intergenerational Herb Potting - Grubs N Bugs and The Cultivating Curmudgeon

Mar 7th - AI - Alex Jenkins from WADSIH

Unfortunately we have been unable to restart in the Tuesday Community Lunches in February as hoped. We are still searching for a cook to lead our volunteers.  If you know someone who might be interested in volunteering for this role, please speak to Vicki or Kritika. We are hopeful that the Community Lunches will return soon.

Coming Up ( Don't forget to Book)

Out N' About - Wellington Dam

Monday 7th April 8am -5pm

Don't miss out on this opportunity to see the worlds biggest Dam Mural!

You may not expect a world-renowned artist to camp in the bush for four months while he’s creating the biggest dam mural on the planet. Nor might you think he’d dangle from ropes wearing a headlight, painting at 4am.

But Australian paintsmith Guido Van Helten isn’t your typical artist, and nor is the statement piece he coated 8000 square metres of the Wellington Dam wall with. The 34m-high, 367m-wide wall finished construction in 1960 and forms the second largest dam in Western Australia, after Lake Argyle.

Join us as we leave the city via Forrest Highway for an exciting day of adventure. First stop Gnomesville where you can add a Gnome to the collection if you want to. Then on to Collie for lunch at the Federal Hotel which has many yummy options for lunch including garlic prawns and chicken satay sticks. We will then visit Wellington Dam to see magnificent mural and finally to Harvey Cheese for tastings and ice cream.

Members $100, non-members $110.

Book your place on the link below
